FAQ
Who are the Fairy Yardmothers
We're neighbors giving neighbors a helping had. Volunteers from the local community who donate their time and effort to help those who are unable to do their own yardwork.
Origin
The concept for the Fairy Yardmothers came out of the City of Lodi Office of Community Development and the Lodi Improvement Committee. When neighbors complained about yards being overgrown, large messes or not being maintained, the city code enforcement would go out and notify the owners about the complaints and get them to rectify the problem. In many cases the homeowners were elderly or disabled and unable to do the work themselves. Those with low, fixed incomes couldn’t afford to pay for someone to do the work for them. Rather than fine them, they wanted to provide an option to get help - neighbors helping neighbors.
Where are you based? Who do you assist?
The Fairy Yardmothers are based in Lodi, CA. Our volunteers live or work locally, to provide assistance to people here in Lodi.
If you're based in Lodi, why a 650 area code number?
We're a local volunteer program (i.e. non-profit) without an office or a physical location. Rather than post any individual's personal home or cell number on the internet (and then get tons of spam calls), we use the free Google Voice service to accept text messages and voicemail. Leave us a message and a Fairy Yardmother volunteer will respond as soon as possible, in most cases within a day or two.
Will you expand or help people outside of Lodi?
Probably not. Or, at least, not very far afield. Our focus is on helping those in our local community. We would encourage others to start their own programs for their communities and happy to offer support and/or advice.
Where did the Fairy Yardmothers name come from?
A group of students collaborated and came up with the name. I suspect that they were inspired by, and perhaps had recently seen, the Cinderella story.
